There is a gym at Burning Man. More than one, in fact. A Burning Man gym is a shaded patch of playa with squat racks, benches, kettlebells, and dumbbells that a theme camp hauls in, builds, hosts, and hauls out again. Ours at Nobo House is called the Playa Power Gym, and it is one of the four pillars we run the camp on: Chill, Dance, Lift, Sweat. If you train several times a week and assumed the burn meant a week off, it does not have to. This post covers what a playa gym actually holds, why lifting helps in the desert, how to train in dust and heat, and how to find a camp that has one. If you would rather just camp with one, the waitlist is at the end.

Leg day on the open playa at the Nobo House gym.

Yes, there is a gym at Burning Man. Several.

Black Rock City has had gyms for years. Pink Gym is probably the best known. Pop Gym runs out of the Mudskippers camp. A camp called Gymnasium lists itself in the official camp directory. Ours is the Playa Power Gym, listed on Playa Events as the Desert Outdoor Gym, and open to the public on a schedule during event week.

They are all gifts. Nobody charges for a set. Nobody checks a membership. You walk up, ask whoever is hosting how it works, and lift. That is the gift economy working the way it is supposed to, and it is also why the etiquette matters more than in a commercial gym. Put the plates back. Wipe the bar. Ask before you take the rack when someone is resting between sets. The people hosting are campers, not staff, and they built the thing.

If you find one and the host asks you to wait ten minutes, that is not a queue for a service. It is a person keeping a shared space safe in wind and dust.

What a playa gym holds

The Playa Power Gym is a real outdoor gym under shade. Squat racks. Flat benches. A run of dumbbells. Kettlebells. Bars and plates that spend eleven months of the year in a shipping container in Reno and one week on the playa.

The 2026 plan listed public hours from Monday through Friday, nine in the morning to six thirty in the evening, with camper attendants covering shifts. Check the current Playa Events listing for the hours in any given year. Attendants are the part most people do not see. Someone has to keep the racks clear, watch the wind, and cover equipment when a storm rolls in. That is contribution work at Nobo House, the same as a kitchen shift.

What a playa gym does not hold: cardio machines, mirrors, air conditioning, or a floor that stays clean. The dust gets into everything. Bars get wiped daily. Bearings get checked at strike. The equipment survives because people take care of it, and because every year we cut anything that did not earn its weight on the truck.

Why lifting helps in the desert

Burning Man is physically hard. You bike more than you think, sleep less than you think, and spend your days hot, dry, and overstimulated. It would be easy to argue that a gym is the last thing anyone needs.

We think the opposite. Movement is one of the fastest ways to bring a stressed body back to baseline. Twenty minutes under a bar in the morning, before the heat, does the same thing for a lot of people that meditation does for others. It puts you back in your body. Rest is not an escape from the burn here; it is how we stay present for it, and for some campers the gym is where that rest starts.

Lift is only one of our four pillars. The gym sits next to sunrise yoga and meditation, Animal Flow and mobility sessions for bodies that have spent a week on a bike, and the steam room and cold plunge under Sweat. We wrote about how that loop works in what a wellness camp is. The short version: lift, sweat, rest, repeat, and go back into the city with something in the tank.

How to train in dust and heat

Training on the playa is not training at home. A few rules make it work.

  • Go when the public schedule and the weather allow. The bars can be hot to the touch by early afternoon.
  • Lower the volume, keep the frequency. Three short sessions beat one heroic one. You are already under a load from heat and sleep debt.
  • Hydrate before you walk over, not after. Bring electrolytes. Sweat evaporates so fast in single-digit humidity that people misjudge how much they lose.
  • Expect dust on everything. Chalk helps. Gloves help. Wipe the bar before and after. Do not lie on a bench without a towel.
  • Protect your skin. Sunscreen, then lift. The shade is real but the light bounces off the playa.
  • If your camp has a steam room or plunge, leave time to rest there after lifting. Our sauna camp post describes the space at Nobo House.

And listen to the host. If they call a stop because the wind is up, the racks are coming down. Nobody wants to explain a plate in a whiteout.

How to find a gym camp

If you are not camping with a gym, you can still use one. Start with Spark, the official camp directory, and search for gym, fitness, or lift in camp descriptions. Check Playa Events once the schedule is published; public gym hours show up there under classes and workshops. On playa, the What/Where/When booklet lists interactivity by day. And ask around. Gym camps tend to cluster in the wellness neighbourhoods, and veteran burners on r/BurningMan know where they were last year.

If you want the gym to be part of your own camp rather than a place you visit, the question to ask any camp is simple: what do you actually have, and who runs it? “We have wellness stuff” is not an answer. “We have two squat racks, a bench, and dumbbells under a forty-foot shade with attendants from nine to six” is.

Nobo House is a camper-run wellness camp at Burning Man. If you want to camp with us in 2027, join the 2027 waitlist and we will email you when applications open.
